Autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system loses its ability to distinguish self from non-self — and begins mounting inflammatory attacks against the body's own tissues. Multiple autoimmune conditions have been linked to alterations in gut microbiome composition (dysbiosis), and some — celiac disease, IBD — are directly intestinal.
