Inflammation is not a disease — it's a biological process. Acute inflammation is the immune system doing exactly what it's supposed to do: flooding tissue with blood, immune cells, and repair signals in response to injury or infection. This resolves cleanly in days to weeks. Chronic low-grade inflammation is different. It's a sustained, low-level immune activation that doesn't resolve — and it's now understood to be a driver or accelerator of most of the major chronic diseases: cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, certain cancers, depression, autoimmune conditions, and metabolic syndrome.
The biological mechanism involves persistent elevation of inflammatory cytokines — particularly interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and C-reactive protein (hsCRP) — that continuously activate NF-κB and keep the immune system in a slow burn. This is distinct from the fever-and-immune-response of acute infection. It's invisible, painless in early stages, and accumulates damage over years.

Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA specifically) reduce inflammatory prostaglandins and promote resolution via resolvins. Vitamin D modulates NF-κB and regulates inflammatory gene expression — low vitamin D correlates strongly with elevated hsCRP. Magnesium suppresses inflammatory cytokine production; deficiency increases IL-6 and TNF-α. Curcumin directly inhibits NF-κB. Glutathione neutralizes the reactive oxygen species that amplify inflammatory signaling. Zinc and vitamin C modulate neutrophil activity and reduce oxidative inflammation.
What to Start With
Measure first — hsCRP and, ideally, IL-6 or homocysteine provide baseline inflammatory status. Dietary priorities: eliminate seed oils and replace with olive oil, reduce refined carbohydrate load, increase fatty fish 2–3×/week, add vegetables high in polyphenols (berries, dark leafy greens, broccoli). Sleep quality and stress management have direct, measurable anti-inflammatory effects. Omega-3 supplementation (2–4g EPA+DHA daily), magnesium, and vitamin D are the foundational nutrient interventions with the most supporting evidence for hsCRP reduction.
